Why sustainability needs better learning tools

Most sustainability knowledge lives in places that were never designed for learning: regulatory texts, assurance standards, and 200-page reports. They are precise, but they are not teachable.

The gap between information and understanding

Reading that Scope 3 covers "indirect emissions in the value chain" tells you almost nothing about what that means for a purchasing decision on a Tuesday afternoon. Understanding comes from manipulating a system and seeing what changes.

  • Reports optimise for completeness and defensibility
  • Learners need feedback, consequence, and repetition

What works better

  1. Visual explainers — turn a framework into a picture you can hold in your head.
  2. Interactive experiments — let people make a decision and watch the footprint move.
  3. Simulations — compress years of consequence into minutes.
  4. Systems framing — show flows and feedback loops, not isolated facts.

If you can play with a concept, you can reason about it. If you can only read it, you can only recite it.
